A Renaissance castle with a wealth of Baroque features
Brežice’s most magnificent building is a two-storey castle, built in the mid-16th century. It stands on the site of a castle that was destroyed during the 1515 Slovene Peasant Revolt. In the 18th century, the fortified Renaissance castle was converted into a residence. The interior was remodelled in the Baroque style and frescoes were painted in the Knight’s Hall, the double staircase and the chapel.A regional museum with contemporary exhibitions
Since 1949, the castle has housed the Posavje Museum Brežice, which puts on exhibitions on the history and heritage of the Posavje region from prehistoric times to the present day. Contemporary exhibitions present the local way of life and feature objects that tell real-life stories about the people, work, feast days, art, war and peace. The Knight’s Hall – a monument to Baroque art that wows anyone who sets foot in it
An important part of the museum experience are the frescoes on the staircase, in the chapel and in the Knight’s Hall. The Knight’s Hall is a one-of-a-kind and largest completely frescoed Baroque hall in Slovenia. The frescoes depicting scenes from ancient mythology were painted in the early 18th century by Frančišek Karl Remb (1675–1718).No reservation or advance notice of your visit is required. You can tour the museum on your own or go on a guided tour, which needs to be arranged in advance.
